First of all, I would like to say that Marie’s last name goes very well with her genre of choice. (SimmMEOW…)That being said, on with the review:
Kicked out from their home by an uncaring family member, two kittens are left on their own to survive. With very little experience in the outside world, they are reduced to eating grass and licking up rain puddles to keep alive from one frightening day to the next.
Until the day someone picks them up and takes them to a shelter. Cowering and afraid, overwhelmed by smells foreign and dangerous (to them), the sisters huddle together in their captivity, not knowing what will come their way next.
Assurances from the other cats in the room, regular (but insubstantial) food, and interaction with humans help the kits adjust to life within walls again. They start to take an interest in their surroundings, especially the various attitudes of the humans who come to see them. It is highly fortunate, in a couple of cases, that the shelter insists on a background check on families and individuals who come in to adopt cats. There are those whose outward attitudes and/or inner animosity make all of the shelter dwellers nervous; when they are turned away, all of the cats sigh with relief.
The two sisters begin to think that they will be spending the rest of their lives in their ample, but dreary, cage. Then one day a woman and her mother come in and change their lives completely.
One sister, now called Athena–the narrator of this tale–finds herself in a new home, surrounded by food, toys, her own pillow, and all the love she could ever want.
Then suddenly she is in the carrying cage again. Athena worries that she has somehow angered her women. Will she be thrown into the shelter again? Or worse? Will she ever see her warm, comfortable home again?
One of the things I loved most about this book was the pictures of Athena, whose fictional past and true present are told in these pages. I could really feel the emotions this kitty was feeling, as she survives the fierce outdoors, protects her sister, gets used to the dreary but safe protection of the shelter, and experiences the ups and downs of beginning to trust again.
I am really hoping that Ms. Symeou writes a follow-up story, fictionalizing what happens with the other kit. Like Athena, I do worry about her.

A Forever Home For Athena edition by Marie Symeou Children eBooks Reviews
Seemed rather simplistically written, perhaps for young adults. Not much of a plot line or conclusion to the story line.
Thank you for a lovely story. I have 2 cats that I have rescued. They couldn't be more loved. Thank you for saving Athena.
I have two rescue cats and easily related to this story. I recommend it for young readers to encourage them to be kind to all animals.
I loved the whole book, the imaginative thoughts about cats communicating with us through pictures, the story about Athena and her mummy having been together before. The pictures of Athena were adorable. I still grieve for my special cat who used to comfort me the way Athena does her mum. Read this book to find a sweet and gentle island of warmth and sentiment.
Why is it that when you find a really enjoyable book...it is too short! This the story of a tiny starving kitten and her sister thrown out like trash when her mother died. The story follows along in the steps Athena's steps to her forever home...cataloguing the fear, thoughts and excitement of her experiences, meeting, loving and growing up in her forever home. Follow along now and enjoy every minute.
Marie did an excellent job of capturing the special bond between cat and human in this account of an abandoned kitten's adoption from a shelter. As only a true cat lover would know, cats are able to control us with their thoughts and they can see the intentions of our hearts by reading our auras. Athena can tell from the start that her human is good and kind and wills her to choose her at the shelter. This she does and little Athena is rescued from her rough start in life to become a cherished and loved pet where her new mummy and grandmother know exactly what she wants and when she wants it. Athena tells us the story from her perspective. Marie is to be congratulated for raising awareness of the plight of abandoned animals and I can't help feeling a little sad wondering what became of Lily - Athena's sister. The reality of the situation is that most animals are not as lucky as Athena.
This book was highly recommended to me by a friend who is a cat lover. Although I am a dog person and very involved in dog rescue, I really enjoyed reading this touching, compassionate cat tale. The author has a talent for using words to create a beautiful scene in the readers mind, much like a quilter uses small pieces of fabric to create a beautiful quilt. Athena's story had a very happy ending and she lived a charmed life with her humans. I am hoping her sister Lily also found a happy home. This author is an inspiration to me. I grew up with 14 cats, and although I don't have a ton of memories of them, I have been inspired to write a tale of my own beloved cats. I am looking forward to reading the newest cat book authored by Ms. Symeou.
